Language

Papers must be submitted in English. If the author is not fluent in English, a professional translator should be employed to translate the paper prior to submission.

Topics

The Bulletin welcomes articles on subjects of interest to professional conservators. Subjects may include conservation treatment case studies; issues of conservation history, philosophy, or method; conservation research; or technical studies aimed at addressing questions in allied fields. Short communications as well as longer submissions are welcomed.

The National Newsletter accepts workshop and conference reviews, technical notes, letters to the editor, opinion pieces and travel notes.

Word length

Currently there is no word limit on papers, although 3,000-5,000 words is most common for a Bulletin article. Shorter “technical notes” and similar articles are also welcome in both print publications.

Manuscript components

For publication in the Bulletin, your paper should include the following components, in this order:

  • Title
  • Names of author(s)
  • Abstract (100-200 words) – the abstract should be a concise summary of your paper, stating its purpose, methodology, and principal findings and conclusions
  • Keywords (4-8, lowercase) – these should describe the main aspects of the paper, such as a broad area of interest (e.g. archaeology), a cultural period, the materials being conserved, or brief terms (e.g. preventive conservation)
  • Introduction or background
  • The main body of the paper, which may include more headings (e.g. Project Method, Results, Discussion etc)
  • A conclusion
  • Acknowledgements, if applicable
  • A brief biography of the author(s) (200 words maximum)
  • Endnotes and references
  • A materials list, if applicable, including manufacturer/supplier details
  • A list of captions for illustrations and figures

National Newsletter submissions are generally more informal; however, the above components should be included where relevant. Style guidelines should also be followed.

Submitting the copy

Submit the following to the Bulletin Editor or the AICCM National Newsletter Editor:

  • An electronic copy of the text, with illustrations as separate files. The text file should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document or in Rich Text Format (*.rtf), in PC-compatible format.
  • Electronic file names should be based on the author’s name.
  • A completed Author’s Checklist and Publishing/Editing Consent Form.
  • The Image Permission Form [Adobe Acrobat PDF - 72.42 KB], when required.

Deadlines

The Bulletin: Papers may be submitted at any time during the year. Once refereed and edited, they will be published in the next issue.

The National Newsletter: 1 February (March issue), 1 May (June issue), 1 August (September issue), 1 November (December issue)

Peer review

All manuscripts submitted to the Bulletin are refereed. Manuscripts are reviewed for their interest and overall suitability for the Bulletin, as well as for accuracy, clarity, and effectiveness of communication. You will be notified whether your article has been accepted for publication within 6 weeks of submitting your article.

If your paper is accepted for publication, it is likely that some revisions will be required or recommended. The author is expected to complete revisions within six weeks of receiving the referees’ report.

AICCM Special Interest Group (SIG) Publications

From time to time, AICCM SIGs publish preprints and postprints from SIG meetings. These publications are usually not peer reviewed prior to publication.

Authors are responsible for the content and accuracy of their submissions and the methods and materials they present.

Papers in SIG Publications may be of any length from a short technical tip to a full-length article.

Papers presented SIG meetings are selected by committee, based on abstracts. If selected, authors then have the opportunity to submit a full paper for publication in the postprints or preprints; there is no further selection review of these papers. The original abstracts are published if the authors do not submit either their full text or a revised abstract.

SIG groups encourage authors of papers that may be of general interest to the conservation community to submit their articles to the Bulletin.

The timeframe for revisions will be set by the coordinator of the SIG publication.
